Au pair in Finland
Official Au Pair in Finland Program Information
There is an official program to be an au pair in Finland and all
that is required is a residence permit. There is an exception for
citizens of EU
countries, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. To
be an au pair in Finland, citizens of these countries must register
their right to reside in Finland, but they do not need a residence
permit. It is the au pair's responsibility to commence their
application in their legal country of residence before entering
Finland.
Au pair in Finland Mandatory Criteria
- An au pair in Finland must be between 17-30 years of age
- You must have proof of Finnish or Swedish language skills or
proof of study of the Finnish culture
- You must not have dependent children
- You must not be a relative of the host family
- Have a written contract between au pair and host family
- Provide a certificate of good health, no more than 3 months
old
- You must have no criminal record
- Provide references from previous child care or household
work
Au Pair in Finland General Information
Pocket Money
- An au pair in Finland is paid a minimum of 252 Euros net per
month pocket money. Public transport compensation may be negotiated
into the contract
Working Hours, free time and holidays
- An au pair in Finland works a maximum of 30 hours per week and
5 hours maximum per day
- An au pair in Finland has at least one day off per week, and
each month at least one of these days must be a Sunday
Accommodation and meals
- An au pair in Finland is provided with a separate bedroom in
the family home. They are also provided with 3 meals per day

Language skills and courses
- An au pair in Finland must have studied or taken an interest in
Finnish or Swedish language or culture, for instance Finnish
history or politics. They must be able to provide proof of
this
- Families must allow time for the au pair to participate in
language courses
Length of stay
- An au pair in Finland can stay a maximum 12 months as an au
pair
Insurances
- The family must provide appropriate medical and accident
insurance for the au pair whilst they are in Finland

Driving
Visa information
Citizens from all countries other than the EU, Iceland,
Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland require an ordinary residence
permit.
The Philippines does not permit its citizens to travel to Europe
as au pairs and they are advised not to apply for a residence
permit for this purpose.
Note: If the au pair plans to be a fulltime child-minder or home
help, they must apply for a residence permit for employed
persons.
Several documents are required to accompany a residence permit
application including a contract between the host family and au

Additionally, the au pair must obtain a Finnish tax card and a
Finnish social security number after arriving in Finland. The host
family must also advise the tax office that they have employed an
au pair in Finland.
